The Meaning of Popular Flowers

Floriography is the language of flowers used during the Victorian era where different flowers and their arrangements convey certain “hidden” or coded meanings from one person to another. The language of flowers allowed individuals to express their feelings and thought without the necessity of verbal communication. Floriography is now a lost art but the general meaning of popular flowers are still observed. According to botanists there are about ten thousand species of flowering plants in the world. However, there are only a few species that are popular to the general public.


The meaning of popular flowers like roses differs in reference to colors. A red rose signifies love, passion, beauty and perfection. A bouquet of red roses expresses a person’s deep passion. A pink rose means elegance, elegance and appreciation. Yellow rose conveys joy and happiness, friendship and a new beginning. White roses signify purity, innocence, humility, youthfulness, sincerity and unity as in marriage. The peach or orange colored rose exudes enthusiasm and desire whereas the lavender rose would mean “I love you at first sight.”


It is one of the world’s oldest cultivated flowers. Generally speaking, a carnation symbolizes fascination, distinction, and love. Solid carnations convey “Yes, I accept” whereas striped carnations say “No, I can’t”.  If you are given a lone pink rose, the sender means “I cannot forget you.” A red carnation means “My heart aches for you.”

Gerbera Daisies

Get a hold of assorted gerbera bouquet and chances are you’d be smiling in no time. The variety exudes cheerfulness and a general lift in spirits. The gerbera is the most popular among the daisy family. It symbolizes beauty and innocence. It also says “I have a crush on you!”


Red tulips are a declaration of love while yellow tulips signify a kind of hopeless love. White tulips say “I forgive you” while variegated tulips mean you have lovely eyes.  In general a tulip signifies charity and fame and is an apt flower for the perfect lover.


Lilies represent a taste of elegance, charm, beauty, grace, and a touch of sophistication. Calla lilies signify beauty.   A white lily means “It’s heavenly to be with you”. Spew hatred by giving an orange lily and make use of a yellow one to shout “I’m walking on air.” To express wealth and pride, the tiger lily is the one to give.


Exotic and beautiful orchids were once thought to be tropical plants. Today, they can be grown anywhere.  Orchids could impart the message of love, beauty, luxury, and strength. In China, orchids are symbolic of having many children. The meaning of popular flowers evolves too. In today’s society, orchids convey a message of delicate beauty.
